How to Make Fire Cider—DIY Cold & Flu Remedy

Fire Cider is an all-natural, organic herbal remedy for colds and flus. It is deeply rooted in folk medicine and can be made with a variety of ingredients depending on the time of year and what’s growing around you. Fire cider is also used an a digestive aid. It is considered a tonic with antibacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial and antifungal properties. It can be taken daily as a preventive and also at the onset of cold, flu or sinusitis. Fire cider also works as a detox by promoting sweating which clears toxins from the body.

Following the New England tradition, Rosemary Gladstar shares her version of this fiery tonic made with:

  • 32 Ounces raw apple cider vinegar
  • 1 large onion, peeled and chopped
  • 2 heads garlic, peeled and chopped fine
  • 1 and 1/2 cups grated horseradish
  • 4 inch piece of fresh ginger, grated
  • 1-2 spicy chili peppers, sliced (or add cayenne powder)
  • Honey (to taste)

1) Place all ingredients into a large mason  jar
2) Pack down slightly
3) Pour apple cider vinegar over the top
4) Gently shake to remove any air bubbles
5) Cover with tight sealing lid
6) Place in dark, cool place for 2 weeks to a month
7) Strain out herbs
8) Add honey to taste

Take up to 1/2 ounce every 2-3 hours when you have a cold, or 1 tablespoon a day as a preventative measure. Consume tonic as a shot. Lasts up to 18 months in the refrigerator.
